In 2002, a renegade science photographer, Martin Waugh, was playing with high-speed photography and discovered he could image two drips of water hitting each other. This special event takes place under special conditions; when a single drop hits a water surface and rebounds up in perfect timing for a second falling drip to collide with the first at its peak of rebound. Martin decided he had to build a special computer controlled dripper to make these collisions and explore the topic photographically. Martin’s drips went viral on the Internet and became the inspiration for numerous arts today. Several companies like Mumford Time systems and Cognisys Inc. make special systems just for this double drip photography. In this article I will explain how you can make your own. For this project I made a stand for the dripper that was more complicated than needed since I plan on using it for a number of demonstrations with students and need it easily adjusted. Now, a new $260 million funding round should help the Silicon Valley startup create even more unusual materials.  Also called additive manufacturing, 3D printing got an early foothold as a way to design prototypes. Since then, it’s also  crept into production lines for finished products. The unusual shapes of 3D-printed elements let companies build plastic components that are lighter than metal alternatives but couldn’t be made with conventional injection molding methods, for example. Making stuff is hard, especially when you are making lots of stuff. The OpenMV Cam project knows this, because it has hit a problem while putting together their cheap machine vision module. The problem is with the BGA solder balls that connect the image sensor to the main board. We’ve covered this intriguing project before: the aim is to build a small, cheap module that can run image processing algorithms to easily give robots sight. The sensor is a Ball Grid Array (BGA) package, which means there are a grid of small solder balls on the back that form the electrical connections. It seems that some of these solder balls are oxidized, preventing them from melting and fusing properly with the board. This is called a head-in-pillow defect, because the ball behaves like your head when you lie down in bed. Your head squishes the pillow, but doesn’t merge into it. There are 38 balls on the OV26040 image sensor and even a single bad link means a failure. The makers of the project have tried a number of solutions, but it seems that they may have to remake the ball links on the back of each sensor. A lightweight earpiece technology promises to meet or beat the performance of the best premium noise-canceling headphones without blocking the ear canal or covering people’s ears like heavy earmuffs. The new noise-cancellation device leverages the not-so-secret fact that wireless network signals can travel 1 million times faster than sound waves. Commercial noise-canceling headphones and earphones have internal microphones to detect incoming sounds so that their digital signal processors (DSPs) can compute an appropriate antinoise signal for canceling each incoming sound. But having microphones located so close to the ears means commercial headphones get just tens of microseconds to process incoming sound, calculate an antinoise signal, and play it through their speakers before the sound reaches the ears. Such a tight computing deadline limits the performance of most active noise-cancellation technology, setting an upper limit on the frequencies it can actively cancel.
