There are endless outdoor pursuits that require boots—and an even greater mix of conditions. You could be traversing wet, sloppy trails; scrambling over rocks; and carefully picking your way through technical terrain. So that’s precisely what we did to find the best options for fall/winter 2019. For our test, we took a dozen pairs of traditional hiking boots and boot-shoe hybrids, then trekked up Kebenkaise, Sweden’s highest peak, and hit wet trails. Stateside, we gauged traction on Utah’s Cedar Mesa and the San Rafael River’s Little Grand Canyon. To evaluate comfort, we backpacked Golden Gate Canyon State Park and the James Peak Wilderness.  After whittling down the list, we ended up with eight hiking boots that provide plenty of comfort with the guts to take on tough terrain. Anti-Slip Leather Safety Boots No matter what kind of adventure you’re embarking on, you’ll need one of these to stabilize your ankles (they’ll also eat dirt and boulders with ease). This hiker builds confidence with an ankle-and-heel strap that you adjust on the fly and grippy lugs that made it easier to scramble over slick rock. At just under a pound per shoe, the Arkali feels like a trail runner. Men’...

With only a few months to go until the introduction of 0.50% global sulphur cap, club

With only a few months to go until the introduction of 0.50% global sulphur cap, club members should have a clarity on their compliance strategy for the IMO 2020. For members who have chosen to achieve compliance by using low sulphur fuel oil, this article serves to understand the specific aspects and variabilities of the 0.50% fuels. Multiple fuels are expected to bring uncertainty post-2020 and running engines reliably/safely will inevitably require greater understanding and more sophisticated fuel handling strategies than today. Members will need to implement a proactive approach when addressing these issues. This can be achieved by making sure that the relevant ship and shore staff are aware of the fuel characteristics and efficiently manage the requirements related to the fuel oil storage, segregation, handling, switching, treatment and usage onboard. There are two basic types of marine fuels – distillate and residual. A third type is a mixture of these two, colloquially known as ‘intermediate’. Distillate fuel, commonly called marine gas oil (MGO), is composed of petroleum fractions that are separated from crude oil in a refinery with a ‘distillation’ process. Residual fu...

Holmen author features iconic La Crosse locations in newest novel | Local

It is her colorful group of eight female cousins, adored aunts and wise mom that inspired the Holmen author’s newest novel, “Close Quarters,” the first in a planned series of four tomes. Centered on cousins Kelly, Lindsay, Mia and Harper, an amalgamation of Zieba’s own kin, the story follows the women’s founding of a bookstore in honor of their late grandmother, an “infamous Midwestern literary critic.” The cousins, each with vastly different personalities, quirks and lifestyles, find themselves struggling after the death of their beloved matriarch and face plenty of obstacles, both personal and work related, as they build their business. From an unexpected pregnancy to a influx of mysterious parcels arriving at the bookstore, the book touches on what Zieba calls “the tribulations of being a woman in today’s high-expectation world, the complexities of close-knit families and the power of friendship.” “I think that being a woman in today’s world is tough,” Zieba says. “There are so many things to balance and this story speaks to that, as well as the benefit of having a strong support system to help you on the days you can’t do it alone.” Zieba, who keeps in touch with her cousins...

Laser cutters are CNC power tools, which means an operator uploads a job digitally and then pushes

Laser cutters are CNC power tools, which means an operator uploads a job digitally and then pushes START to let the machine do all the work while they lie back in a hammock sipping a margarita, occasionally leaping out in a panic because the sound coming from the machine changed slightly. Like other power tools, laser cutters are built around doing one thing very well, but they require an operator’s full attention and support. The operator needs to handle all the other things that go on before, during, and after the job. It’s not too hard to get adequate results, but to get truly professional and repeatable ones takes work and experience and an attention to detail. People often focus on success stories, but learning from failures is much more educational. In the spirit of exploring that idea, here are my favorite ways to fail at laser cutting and engraving. Not all of these are my own personal experience, but they are all someone’s personal experience. Null Space Labs gets a laser cutter – no doors or stairs for this thing! New facilities, services underway at Legazpi City slaughter house

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct 10 (PIA) – An additional P5-Million has been appropriated by the city chief to improve the Legazpi City slaughterhouse. According to city veterinarian Dr. Emmanuel Estipona, the P5million allotment will be used to purchase equipment for slaughtering animals. This equipment will include the de-hairing machine and additional scalding bath and set of trollies for easier and faster slaughtering of animals. “Legazpi City Mayor Noel Rosal also pledged another van to be used for the delivery of meat to the market, malls and other meat vendors,” he added. “From January to September of this year, the Double AA slaughter house of Legazpi has recorded an income in the amount of P10.8 Million from slaughtering services,” he said. Estipona cited that his office has conducted a series of inspection and monitoring in all public markets in the city including malls, groceries and other meat vendors to make sure all the meat are healthy and safe for public consumptions. “Slaughtering of meat in the barangays is prohibited in this city. Only the Double AA slaughter house of Legazpi is authorized to slaughter animals to avoid illegal slaughteri...

Even in the event of over-torque the internal parts of the valve cannot be damaged and will continue to rotate and function as normal. (Image source: Trelleborg) The new gate valve incorporates a custom seal that demonstrates pioneering stem sealing technology that reduces the “risk of contamination and failure”. The seal was specifically engineered for this compact and robust subsea valve that has already achieved field-proven success. As subsea oil and gas exploration became increasingly difficult, LB Bentley recognised the need for a highly specialised gate valve that could handle a wide range of extreme operating pressures and temperatures. Bentley has developed its innovative Medium Duty Rotary Gate Valve, which has minimal moving parts and a time-saving quarter-turn mechanism that can be operated manually or with hydraulics. Even in the event of over-torque the internal parts of the valve cannot be damaged and will continue to rotate and function as normal. Antoine Charrier, a key account manager at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, said, “Throughout the process, we constantly had to think about the safety issues and challenges that are frequently faced when working with vita...

Mains Power Supply For ATtiny Project Is Probably A Bad Idea

When designing a mains power supply for a small load DC circuit, there are plenty of considerations. Small size, efficiency, and cost of materials all spring to mind. Potential lethality seems like it would be a bad thing to design in, but that didn’t stop [Great Scott!] from exploring capacitive drop power supplies. You know, for science. The backstory here is that [Great Scott!] is working on a super-secret ATtiny project that needs to be powered off mains. Switching power supplies are practically de rigueur for such applications, but compared to the intended microcontroller circuit they are actually quite large, and they’ve just been so done before. So in order to learn a thing or two, [Scott!] designed a capacitive dropper supply, where the reactance of the cap acts like a dropping resistor to limit the current. His first try was just a capacitor in series with an LED; this didn’t end well for the LED. To understand why, he reverse-engineered a few low-current mains devices and found that practical capacitive droppers need a few more components, chiefly a series resistance to prevent inrush current from getting out of hand, but also a bridge rectifier and a zener to clamp th...

Vigilant Personal Protection Systems Introduces Complete Line of Personal Protection Alarms

Just in time for back to campus, Minneapolis-based Vigilant Personal Protection Systems is introducing a complete line of personal protection alarms. Designed to be carried with you where ever you go, Vigilant’s personal protection alarms feature ear piercing 130dB alarms aimed at diffusing dangerous situations. The full line of alarms will be available for domestic shipment to retail beginning in mid July, 2011. Personal alarms are one of the fastest growing segments at retail in the self defense industry, because an attacker’s worst enemy is attention. Personal alarms are legal to carry in all 50 states (even on airplanes!) and are a very safe and effective method of self defense. They require no training or skill to operate, and can be used by anyone regardless of age or physical ability. Police Officers, Campus Safety and Security Consultants recommend the use of personal safety alarms. Victims are often too traumatized to shout for help in unfamiliar and dangerous situations, increasing their vulnerability. The high pitched alarm is intended to scare off an assailant while switching the element of surprise from the attacker to the victim. Criminals do not like to draw a...

The Shocking Truth About Transformerless Power Supplies

Transformerless power supplies are showing up a lot here on Hackaday, especially in inexpensive products where the cost of a transformer would add significantly to the BOM. But transformerless power supplies are a double-edged sword. That title? Not clickbait. Poking around in a transformerless-powered device can turn your oscilloscope into a smoking pile or get you electrocuted if you don’t understand them and take proper safety precautions. But this isn’t a scare piece. Transformerless designs are great in their proper place, and you’re probably going to encounter one someday because they’re in everything from LED lightbulbs to IoT WiFi switches. We’re going to look at how they work, and how to design and work on them safely, because you never know when you might want to hack on one. Here’s the punchline: transformerless power supplies are safely useable only in situations where the entire device can be enclosed and nobody can accidentally come in contact with any part of it. That means no physical electrical connections in or out — RF and IR are fair game. And when you work with one, you have to know that any part of the circuit can be at mains voltage. Now read on to see why...
