What is a Lithium-Ion Battery? A Better Power Source

It’s about 95 percent likely that you used a device with a lithium-ion battery before you got dressed this morning. Maybe it was even more than one device: a watch, a toothbrush, a laptop or tablet, and almost certainly your phone. Even your car might use such a battery – but hopefully, you dressed before driving. That’d make for an awkward commute, especially for you carpoolers! Lithium-ion technology powers a mind-boggling amount of stuff around us – even a constantly increasing number of power tools. It’s so common and reliable that it’s easy to take it for granted. But how – and why – did it win (at least for now) the tech race over other battery types? After all, what is a lithium-ion battery? If you’re positively charged for a pack of information, let’s find out. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERSgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1389975325257-0′); }); All batteries create a current by releasing electrons through a chemical reaction. Unsurprisingly, batteries take their names from the elements involved in that reaction. Do you remember using NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries? Did you have tools with NiCD (Nickel-Cadmium) packs? So lithium-i...

Zolgensma set a new drug pricing bar. Insurers show some signs of pushback

Zolgensma (onasemnogene abeparvovec) wasn’t the first gene therapy approved in the U.S. That milestone belongs to Spark Therapeutics’ Luxturna (voretigene neparvovec), a treatment for a rare type of inherited blindness. Yet, given the severity of spinal muscular atrophy and the life-saving efficacy shown for Zolgensma in clinical testing, Novartis’ drug is viewed as an early test case for the curative promise held out by gene therapy.  Roughly 450 to 500 people are born with SMA each year in the U.S. For infants affected with SMA, a gene called survival motor neuron 1 is defective or missing, disrupting production of a protein that’s vitally important for motor development. Zolgensma fixes that, delivering a functional copy of the needed gene to halt disease progression.  But at more than $2 million per patient, Zolgensma also represents a substantial challenge to current systems for covering and reimbursing treatment by publication. So far, according to analysts at Bernstein, insurers appear to be taking a more cautious approach than the Food and Drug Administration, which approved Zolgensma for infants less than 2 years of age with SMA confirmed by muta...

GROB 5-axis machining center with Siemens CNC onboard reduces cycle time by 50% and tooling costs by 60% for Seattle-based job shop Honeycutt Manufacturing, a Mukilteo, Washington (Seattle) job shop in service to the aerospace, marine and general industrial markets, made a major investment recently in a GROB G550T 5-axis universal machining center. To say the purchase was a “game changer” would be an understatement.  This family-owned and operated machine shop was running 2-axis lathes and VMCs for a number of years and doing quite well. The business came largely from the various Boeing Everett facilities and other aerospace-related companies in the local supply chain to that major OEM. As General Manager Nick Honeycutt explains, “We didn’t feel we had the workload for a 5-axis machine at the time our local machine tool dealer, Vince Selway of Machine Tools NW, approached us about the GROB machines. We have a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Vince, so we were certainly interested in his suggestions.” Honeycutt subsequently purchased a 4-axis HMC and the results were acceptable plus a base savings had been realized, but then a particular job opportunity presented it...

Notebook Review: MSI GE70 Apache Pro With Nvidia GTX 860M Graphics

Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture and GeForce Experience software breathes much-needed new life into traditional gaming notebooks like MSI’s GE70 Apache Pro. It doesn’t hurt that it’s augmented by an exceptional keyboard from SteelSeries, a zippy Intel Core i7-4700HQ clocked at 3.2GHz, and Nvidia’s powerful GTX 860M. With an affordable focus on high quality 1080p gaming, is this the right laptop for you? Before we take the deep dive and explore that question, here’s a look at the GE70′s key specs. This model retails as listed for $1299. The most important takeaway with MSI’s GE70 Apache Pro is that it’s very competitively priced for a 17″ gaming laptop, especially when surveying the competition. That said, some minor and reasonable sacrifices occur at this price point with regard to aesthetics and form factor. It clocks in at 1.5-inches thick and weighs about 6 pounds, so it doesn’t set any thinness records like 2013′s Razer Blade, but neither does it resemble the hulking behemoth that is the ASUS G750 series. The red trim against matte black, however, gives it a sporty look. Overall it’s a very safe, trad...

IDAct tech uses stickers to smarten up dumb objects

Essentially cheap, battery-less, sticker-type devices, RFID tags transmit a signal when temporarily powered up by the electromagnetic signal from a reader device. Now, thanks to experimental new technology, they could be used to bring “smart” functionality to plain ol’ analog objects. Usually, RFID (radio frequency identification) tags are simply used to provide basic information. In a typical scenario, a worker might point a handheld reader at a tag that’s applied to an object which is being shipped, or that’s sitting on a warehouse shelf. The tag would respond by transmitting a signal, containing uniquely-coded information such as the serial number or ship date of the item. The IDAct system, however, takes things a step further. Developed by a team at the University of Michigan, it can detect tiny fluctuations within a tag’s signal, indicating whether or not the tagged item is in motion, or if it’s being touched. Additionally, by analyzing changes in a room’s electromagnetic field, the system can determine if a person is present within that room. “Every object causes electromagnetic interference in a specific way,” sa...
